Forecast: Provide a forecast of what the workforce demand would be over a five-year period to produce and market your team’s technical application or process. Include the impact such production would have on the marketplace.

Degree Programs: Give two examples of undergraduate or graduate degree programs in science or engineering that directly relate to your team's NCT technical application. For each program, be sure to include the following: the URL address of the institution, the department (for example, chemical engineering, electronic engineering) where the program is offered, and a brief description of the program of study.

Gene Therapy Program: Develop an idea for a new science and/or engineering degree program that might emerge given the advancements in scientific knowledge that the team has identified. Provide a title and 100-word description of this new degree program.

Forecast

This is our forecast for the workforce demand required to produce our product over the next few years. We believe that this is an unpredictable future because a lot of people think that the research required to develop methods of gene therapy is not ethical, and the research could be banned.

Degree Programs

Molecular and Cellular Biology(1)

A Ph.D. degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the Medical College of Ohio will provide students with a unique opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of the function of cells at the molecular level. Research areas include gene therapy, gene regulation, molecular virology, protein structure/function, development, molecular genetics, cancer biology, signal transduction and receptor biology, and membrane transport and bioenergetics.

Biomedical Sciences(2)

The Molecular Basis of Disease program, also at the Medical College of Ohio, is a research-oriented program designed to develop the students' intellectual creativity and research competence in disease mechanisms and therapies. Research areas include bacterial and fungal pathogenesis, cancer biology, cancer genetics, cancer prevention, cancer therapy, gene regulation, molecular and cellular immunology, renal physiology, reproductive biology, signal transduction, toxicology, vaccine development, and virology.

Gene Therapy Specialist Degree

Viral Gene Therapy

This graduate degree program is designed to teach and train graduates to use all of the techniques of gene therapy. Although there are other types on gene therapy being researched, viral gene therapy is winning out and we believe that it will become the dominant method of gene therapy. This program will inform the graduates of all the disorders and the most efficient way to treat them. Students will also have to take ethics classes because gene therapy could be used in unethical ways. We are firm believers that new techniques that could harm patients should not be used on humans untill there is good reason to believe that the patient will not be in danger.
